My Life as an Eating Psychology Coach: Samantha Russell

What made you want to become an Eating Psychology Coach?

After completing my Master’s research focused on how people connect food and health, I started to understand just how confused and overwhelmed many of us are about how and what to eat, what we should look like, and how we should feel about it. During this time, I went through my own struggles with “healthy eating” and emotional eating, and it took me about 7 years to really come out the other side. I found I had a lot to offer others – it doesn’t have to take 7 years of lonely trial and error! I did a lot of research, and because I was already a teacher, had a degree in psychology, and loved the evidence-based approach at IPE, becoming an Eating Psychology Coach was a clear winner.

What do you love about being an Eating Psychology Coach?

I love that I get the opportunity to connect with women from all around the world and help them work towards a better relationship with food and body. I feel like we all have so much power and potential that gets tangled up in eating struggles. Helping ladies to free themselves, and their energy, from that struggle is amazing.

What does your practice look like?

I work with women all over the world via Skype. The Internet lets me work with ladies from the UK, to South Korea, to New Zealand. I specialize in helping women who struggle with unwanted eating habits – such as binge eating, emotional eating, overeating, and comfort eating. I offer an 8 week 1 on 1 program, and a 9 week small group program.

How did your education at the Institute prepare you to work successfully with clients?

The support offered by the Eating Psychology Coach training definitely prepared me to work with clients. I still use a modified version of the intake questions provided by IPE with every client I work with. The program not only gave me a place to start as a beginner coach, but also notes and materials that I can return to. As I grow, I find new and deeper areas to explore. The material in the certification has so many facets that continue to support my work with clients, even long after graduation.

What was your favorite aspect of the Training?

I love the fact that all the Training audios were downloadable. I was able to save them all and study while I traveled. For anyone juggling study with a full-time job, that’s invaluable. I feel like IPE was working hard to make the study and materials really accessible and digestible, which was super supportive.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted your professional life/financial well-being?

During my first year of business, coaching has provided a steady – and very welcome – partial second income. I love the work so much, and I’m thrilled to be transitioning to coaching full time in 2017. The flexibility and depth of the work is fantastic, and connecting with clients and helping from such a strong and effective mind-body perspective is a dream come true. The Training has changed the direction of my career, and given me a whole new array of professional dreams and goals.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted you personally?

I’ve ended up learning a lot about myself during the first part of my journey as an Eating Psychology Coach. While I have a degree in psychology, I always treated eating as a purely biological function. Since learning to approach food from a dynamic eating psychology perspective, I have grown into a more positive, relaxed, and happy eater. There is now so much more beauty and depth to my personal relationship with food and body.

What do you see for yourself in your future as an Eating Psychology Coach – where is your work evolving towards?

In the near future I am shifting towards working full-time as an Eating Psychology Coach. I feel so inspired and energized to help women rise up from their struggle with eating and body image, it’s definitely the direction I want to keep working in. I’m working towards evolving my group program, and developing materials for a self-paced course focused on healing emotional eating through self-care.

Why Would You Recommend the Training to Others?

I would recommend the Eating Psychology Coach Training because it broadens your mind in ways you can’t even imagine. Food, eating, body, and self are such complex and deep areas – and our current culture complicates things even further. The EPCC Training gives an awesome framework to both understand and work with these things from a place of respect, positivity, and integrity. There’s also a lot of science and research backing up all the approaches.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Being an Eating Psychology Coach gives me a positive, dynamic, and effective way to help both myself and others heal. It allows me the freedom to know that no one is broken, and gives me the support I need to be there for my clients. The feeling that comes from making the food-body-eating world just a little less confusing and painful is awesome.

My Life as an Eating Psychology Coach: Kimberly Irlbeck

What made you want to become an Eating Psychology Coach?

After 20 years working as a personal trainer and health coach, I knew my clients’ challenges with food and body image were much deeper and more complex than what they were eating and how much they exercised. I often had clients talking to me about their relationships, sex life, job stress, and the family dynamics they grew up in. Diving into the psychology of eating was a natural fit for me to take clients to a deeper level of healing and health.

What do you love about being an Eating Psychology Coach?

Diving deeper into the emotional, spiritual, and relational aspects of a person’s relationship with food and body has always been my passion. I have seen so many people break free from crazy “food rules” and negative body image, and transform from body hate to body appreciation and love. I could never go back to just wellness or health coaching without the eating psychology aspect of my work. This model combines the best of sound nutritional principles, eating rhythm, and healthy ways to move with principles of changing the mind and emotions, not just the physical body. As a personal trainer, I now work with the whole person, not just the physical body.

What does your practice look like?

Most of my clients are between 40 and 80 years old. I see both men and women. Many of my clients have a Christian faith, so I combine using their faith and Biblical beliefs with moving forward in healing issues of weight, body image, health, and their relationship with food. I also offer life coaching and personal training and have a Masters in Christian counseling for those wanting to really get healing in the emotional and spiritual realms. I see clients face-to-face, do phone coaching, and offer email support to all clients.

How did your education at the Institute prepare you to work successfully with clients?

Where do I begin? My education at IPE catapulted my ability to analyze a client’s macronutrient balance, and it gave me lots of fun and creative ideas for homework and assignments to help clients uncover hidden truths and realizations. I found a “tribe” that “got me” and the work I had been doing with clients for years, something I did not know existed until I was a student at IPE. Other health coaches around me would wonder where I came up with the ideas to work with clients on a deeper level. Marc verbalized the things I instinctively knew in my heart about how to effectively work with people to see lasting change.

What was your favorite aspect of the Training?

I found the initial interview questions and creative ideas for homework assignments most valuable. I appreciated the extra reading list and the ability to do the work at home on my own time. I also loved meeting up with other coaches who share my passion from around the world in Boulder at our graduation.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted your professional life/financial well-being?

It has given me more confidence in working with body image and long term weight loss, and has given me many tools I can use in working with the variety of clients who walk through my door. I have the skills and knowledge to charge more per hour and to select which clients I want to work with.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted you personally?

I have never looked like a traditional personal trainer and was always self-conscious of my body shape and size until this Training. I now see my extra weight as stored potential energy for what God is calling me to do. I enjoy food more and can allow myself sensual eating pleasure without having to hide while eating. Before this Training, I would eat treats in my car, a closet, the bathroom, or anywhere people could not see me, due to the guilt I felt if I ate anything that was not considered a perfect health food. Now I have freedom to enjoy a piece of pizza or a bowl of ice cream around friends without hating myself later. I can look in the mirror and appreciate my curves and voluptuous body.

What do you see for yourself in your future as an Eating Psychology Coach – where is your work evolving towards?

I want to spread the message and truths I learned in this Training and plan on doing group speaking engagements, group coaching, and weekly “weight release” meetings, as well as continuing to learn and share with others.

Why Would You Recommend the Training to Others?

This program is well rounded, goes after the deep and meaningful issues in life, and is perfect for working on your own issues while also learning new skills and tools to help others. The case studies Marc shares are a wonderful addition to the book learning and PowerPoints.

Anything else you’d like to share?

This Training has set me apart from other health and wellness coaches. It has filled my tool bag with lots of new things to try and ideas to use when I have a client who is stuck or has been unable to move forward in healing issues around body image, weight, and who they are as human beings.

My Life as an Eating Psychology Coach: Kim Bunney

What made you want to become an Eating Psychology Coach?

I was already a nutrition coach but I soon discovered that no matter how well written the nutrition plans were, only 1 in 10 people would comply with the plan without self-sabotaging their efforts. I knew there was more to Nutrition Coaching than just providing knowledge and expecting behaviour change. I felt I owed it to my clients to understand the whole picture.
As we are humans, not robots I wanted to deal with the emotional side of my client’s nutrition journey. I wanted to see sustainable progress with my client’s relationship with food, mind and body.

What do you love about being an Eating Psychology Coach?

The amazing personal transformations I get to play a role in are by far the most rewarding. Knowing that I have helped another man or woman end the war on themselves, is worth so much more than any words could express.
I see women move through feelings of loathing, punishing, and ignoring their bodies to nurturing, loving, respecting, listening, and understanding them. There’s a magic “light bulb of love moment” when they realize they are in control and it was always their choice.

What does your practice look like?

Mostly I do individual consultations in person or via phone with women, men, and CrossFit athletes.
I love to do “Mindset Nutrition” seminars. They run for 90 mins and I discuss all aspects of mind body nutrition. I complete seminars for fitness centres, corporate offices or I do more casual seminars at someone’s home. For example, I can do seminars for a girl’s night in with friends with wine and nibbles!
I also specialize in working with groups in 6 week Mindset and Nutrition Group Challenges. These are not your average 30 day ban on fun. I really dig deep on an emotional level and get participants to change their perspective on many of their thoughts and beliefs about food, their lifestyle, and how this impacts their behaviours and affects their health holistically.

How did your education at the Institute prepare you to work successfully with clients?

This course utterly blew my mind! I did a complete 180 in the way I approached not only my nutrition clients but it also drastically improved my relationship with food and my body. Understanding my own struggles gave me a better platform to relate to and help others fight their battles.

What was your favorite aspect of the Training?

I really enjoyed the downloadable audios. Marc is so passionate! The lectures were truly inspiring and the information covered was in-depth, easy to digest, and easy to implement.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted your professional life/financial well-being?

I only graduated in May this year so my business is still in its infancy, but I have been able to leave my full time job and support myself whilst studying further. I can see my business growing stronger every day.
I am so proud of the work I am doing and the messages I am sharing. I am so pleased to be contributing now to the rise of self-love and embracing our bodies rather than fuelling the fires of self-hate and comparisons so commonly seen in the health and fitness industry.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted you personally?

If it weren’t for IPE I may never have uncovered my PTSD. I suffered with chronic fatigue, stress, and anxiety for 3 years. It feels so amazing to finally have answers and to be able to focus on healing the issue rather than continually worry about what was “wrong” with my health.
Before IPE, I was fixated on looking a certain way by following diets. I can honestly say now that I love and accept my body as it is and I eat a diet that is guilt-free and balanced with both body & soul nourishing foods. I’ve never felt so free!

What do you see for yourself in your future as an Eating Psychology Coach – where is your work evolving towards?

IPE has fuelled my passion for understanding human behaviour. I am currently studying to be a Registered Counsellor and have recently become accredited as a practitioner of the Australian Centre of Eating Disorders. I plan on continuing to influence positive change in people’s relationships with mind, body, and food through one-on-one consulting, seminars, and 6-week challenges both online and in person. I’d also like to specialise more in counseling people with disordered eating. Thinking big, I plan to write a woman’s gift comic book and hope to raise money for charity through its sales.

Why Would You Recommend the Training to Others?

Emotional health is a top priority for us all. I feel the health industry is fuelling the battle of people at war with themselves. They’re overtraining, punishing, under eating, binge and emotional eating, following fad diets, hating their bodies, and then passing it onto the next generation. It has to stop!
IPE gives health professionals the missing link to helping people reach their higher goal which is happiness, self-love, and acceptance. Once you’re on track to that goal, everything falls into place.

Anything else you’d like to share?

I can’t thank IPE enough for putting together such an amazing course.
It has changed my life and I can genuinely see it changing others’ lives for the better, too.

My Life as an Eating Psychology Coach: Alison Kingston

What made you want to become an Eating Psychology Coach?

I had been seeing clients in my nutritional therapy practice for nearly 7 years and I know I wasn’t getting to the core of people’s health challenges. I was naturally getting drawn to take a more gentle approach when giving my clients recommendations around food. I was cutting back on how many supplements and focusing on where my clients’ main stress was coming from. When I saw the Eating Psychology Coach Certification Training, I knew this was what I needed. I needed to support my clients more holistically and identify the core issue for them.

What do you love about being an Eating Psychology Coach?

I love how I can combine my nutritional therapy knowledge with my eating psychology knowledge. I am a lot more intuitive and trusting with my clients and can let what needs to come up in our session come up naturally. People can’t believe how easy it is to open up to me. I now know it can be more about letting the client talk and process what comes up by me just holding space for them. No fixing, just listening and acknowledging. It’s a beautiful experience for this to happen naturally and I always feel so grateful to have received this wisdom from Marc.

What does your practice look like?

I see clients in 3 different locations. I want to start doing more on Skype when I travel. I see a lot of clients who have digestive issues. I also see people for weight loss, autoimmune conditions, low energy, and sports nutrition. I do programs for 3 sessions, 6 sessions, and 12 sessions. I like to get to know the client and their aims before we decide which program is best for them. I also have an online course called Embodied Weight Loss. I plan on creating more online courses very soon.

How did your education at the Institute prepare you to work successfully with clients?

I was very lucky as I was able to introduce what I was learning in the Training straight away. I was already seeing clients and it was very natural to start using all the tools I was learning in the Training. It’s given me amazing confidence and trust with my clients. It is so satisfying to empower my clients to better understand why their bodies are giving them signs through symptoms. They learn that something is out of balance on a deeper level. I work on many levels with my clients.

What was your favorite aspect of the Training?

I loved watching the video lectures. They were easy to follow and I love the connection with Marc. It really felt like he was talking directly to me. The staff were amazing to support in any way I needed. The live event was a wonderful experience and one I will never forget. I made friends for life and the energy in the room was incredible.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted your professional life/financial well-being?

I have a thriving business and I have lots of great plans to keep growing. I am very excited to help more and more people be the best they can be.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted you personally?

Personally the course made a great positive impact on my relationship with food and my body. I had done a lot of healing over the last few years but this brought it all together so wonderfully. I am so grateful for all I have gained personally and professionally from this course.

What do you see for yourself in your future as an Eating Psychology Coach – where is your work evolving towards?

I see myself giving more workshops and seminars in my country and in many others around the world. I see myself having more online courses available on my website.

Why Would You Recommend the Training to Others?

It is the missing link in so many health therapies. This course will change your life in many ways and all for the better.

Anything else you’d like to share?

Keep up the great work. Thank you so much.

My Life as an Eating Psychology Coach: Tammy Shemesh

What made you want to become an Eating Psychology Coach?

I was teaching yoga to patients in an Eating Disorder Clinic, and in my daily life I was meeting so many women who looked like they had the ‘perfect’ body, but were still deeply unsatisfied with it. Watching them try diet after diet, restricting, over-exercising, counting calories, I became fascinated in the subject as this is how I was for many years, too. A friend told me about the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, and I honestly felt that the Coach Certification Course was written specifically for me.

What do you love about being an Eating Psychology Coach?

I love holding space for clients to realize that fundamentally there is nothing wrong with them and that their challenges with food and body are pointing to to something deeper. Marc David taught us “the way you do food is the way you do life” and I love connecting the dots with people’s relationship with food and the patterns in their life. I also love supporting women to move past their eating challenges and and to use that energy for something more purposeful.

What does your practice look like?

My clients are mostly women and I see clients both in my home office and via skype, which allows me to work with clients globally. I offer 6 or 12 week packages and there is the option to integrate yoga and meditation into the sessions. I specialize in body image and predominantly work with those that restrict, binge, overeat and have fears around food, or are unable to stick to a healthy way of eating and find it overwhelming to find time for self-care and nourishment.

How did your education at the Institute prepare you to work successfully with clients?

I found the case studies that Marc David presented to us during the training to be invaluable in preparing me to work successfully with clients. I continuously refer back to these audios when I work with clients. They were so diverse and interesting, and covered such a broad range of challenges and symptoms.

What was your favorite aspect of the Training?

I loved the course content, but I have to say my favorite aspect was the Facebook group. It was like no other online group I have experienced. So much support, insights and helpful information. It became an essential learning tool through the training, especially because there were so many other students with a wealth of knowledge to learn from. The IPE staff running the facebook group also provided the most compassionate and well articulated responses to posts that I was continually in awe.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted your professional and/or personal life?

The training certainly did make me question the beliefs and assumptions I have around food and body image and softened my attitude towards my previous relationship with food. I felt like I found my calling. That my purpose is to support other women in finding peace with food and body image.

What do you see for yourself in your future as an Eating Psychology Coach – where is your work evolving towards?

I love working one-on-one with clients as it’s so personal and individual, so my goal is to expand my practice and support as many women as possible in changing their relationship with food through eating psychology and yoga. I hope to create an online component to my packages and run group retreats.

Why Would You Recommend the Training to Others?

I feel so fortunate to have had the opportunity to learn from Marc David. He has such a wealth of information and shares it so passionately. I would highly recommend the training for anyone that is ready to look at food and psychology in a whole new light.

My Life as an Eating Psychology Coach: Jessica Rae

What made you want to become an Eating Psychology Coach?

II struggled with a severe eating disorder since the age of 8. I tried every single diet, program, workout regimen, etc. I could get my hands on, to no avail. I would get a little better for a while, but eventually fall back into the same old destructive patterns.
After years upon years of this battle, I stumbled upon the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, watched one of Marc David’s videos and instantly knew this Training was something I had to look further into.
I have always been passionate about nutrition and working with people so this work was incredibly appealing to me. I realized I had a chance to both help myself overcome my own personal struggles while helping guide others through the same journey.

What do you love about being an Eating Psychology Coach?

One word: Transformation. Many clients come to me on their last straw believing there is no hope left and that they will continue this struggle for the rest of their lives. Being able to help guide others through their own journey to freedom with food has been the biggest blessing in my life. Watching my clients transform their lives with the same success that I have experienced is a wonderful, rewarding, and motivating feeling.

What does your practice look like?

I’m fortunate that I have both local as well as many worldwide clients. In order to accommodate them, I see many in person for one-on-one as well as group consultations. Most of my practice is shifting online via video communication to accommodate those further away. In addition, I have run two retreats in Bali, Indonesia (“End Your War with Food, Body and Pleasure”) and have coached group classes at multiple Wellness Centers around the US and New Zealand. I am currently in the process of creating a No Diet Journey Master Course, set to be released in early November of this year.
Most of my clients tend to be between the ages of 25-35 struggling with weight, overeating, yo-yo dieting, and body dysmorphia. I mainly specialize in healthy weight loss with a focus on ending the confusion around “dieting” and food.

How did your education at the Institute prepare you to work successfully with clients?

Without my education at the Institute for the Psychology of Eating, I would not be prepared to successfully walk clients through this journey. The information I learned through the Training was invaluable both for my own life and for my clients. From nutrition principles, diving into the world of the mind, and even the back end of my business creating websites and how to optimally deliver information to clients, the Institute provided me with everything I needed to hit the ground running as soon as I graduated.

What was your favorite aspect of the Training?

This is a difficult question to answer as I truly loved every part of the Training. I was about 7 months into my travels around the world when I started this program. Traveling from one country to another, naturally I was a bit nervous about how I would manage my online studies. I was reassured this was very possible as soon as I recognized how well organized, user friendly and nicely spaced out this Training was. The Institute exceeded my expectations on every level. Above all, the videos with Marc were my favorite. The passion he has for his life’s work shines through in every video and kept me engaged and interested throughout every topic covered.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted your professional life/financial well-being?

Being an Eating Psychology Coach has given me the freedom to work remotely, set my own schedule, and travel more freely while feeling constantly rewarded and motivated each and every day. This career path provided me with the opportunity to help people and create a lifestyle which I had always envisioned. This dream became a reality and I feel very fortunate.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted you personally?

My personal life has benefitted on so many levels from being an Eating Psychology Coach. The quality of my relationships with family and friends has increased exponentially and much of it is a direct result from the training I have received from the Institute for the Psychology of Eating. I no longer struggle with crazy battles around food and body; the battles I never thought I would be free from. Prior to this work, I had no idea how much those issues affected my relationships and life in general. This translates into being better able to relate and assist clients through their personal life struggles.

What do you see for yourself in your future as an Eating Psychology Coach – where is your work evolving towards?

It’s simple; I want to help as many people as I can in my life and information is the key. In an effort to spread this knowledge, my work is evolving toward delivering online courses to anyone with access to a computer. In addition, and understanding the need for this movement, I am adding more retreats to my travel schedule. I have found that week-long-focused, one-on-one and group training sessions render incredible results for my clients. These week-long retreats have proven to be very successful in breaking clients of old patterns and instilling new, healthy habits they can take home and continue to practice; fast tracking the journey to freedom.

Why Would You Recommend the Training to Others?

The Institute for the Psychology of Eating changed my life. Initially, and from a monetary perspective, this program seemed a lot for me to invest in. I decided to take a giant leap of faith and trust my instinct as I really believed in the Training. Afterall, I knew this was what I needed to help me open the next chapter in my life. I am eternally grateful for the life changing work the Institute is delivering. I highly recommend this Training to anyone struggling with food or wanting to work in the Health Coaching industry. Simply said, there is no other Training like it.

Anything else you’d like to share?

My life is exponentially better and more fulfilling on every level because of this work. I believe wholeheartedly in the Institute and the Training. It was the best investment I have ever made, both for my life and for humanity as I know I am personally and positively impacting individuals around the world as an Eating Psychology Coach.
It has been a beautiful journey thus far and I look forward to seeing where life as an Eating Psychology Coach takes me.

My Life as an Eating Psychology Coach: Sue Bradley

What made you want to become an Eating Psychology Coach?

As a yoga teacher, I always intended to study nutrition to go alongside my teaching. But as I looked around, none of the nutrition courses “grabbed” me in the way the Eating Psychology course did – they just didn’t ring true. I didn’t want to be in the business of telling people what to eat. But the philosophy of the IPE matched that of my yoga school – teaching people to be the general managers of their own bodies seemed like the right thing to do to me, rather than prescribing diets. So I went for it!

What do you love about being an Eating Psychology Coach?

I love being an Eating Psychology coach because I am able to help so many different types of people, and everyone is so interested in what I do, whether I’m working with them or not. It’s a fascinating subject, and I enjoy it very much.

What does your practice look like?

I see private clients on a 1:1 basis both in person and on Skype. I also offer courses in food education and Eating Psychology workshops. I don’t really specialise as such, but I do enjoy getting people off junk food by getting them to really understand what’s in it, changing their habits, so they no longer have the need or desire to eat “food related products”. I have worked with people in their 50’s who have just been diagnosed as pre-diabetic, and also with younger people who are trying to lose weight and who are “fed up” with dieting.

How did your education at the Institute prepare you to work successfully with clients?

The course was very thorough, and I felt very well prepared to start working with clients just as soon as I graduated. Sometimes I had to research particular medical conditions that my clients presented with, but the information from the Training can be mapped over to any situation.

What was your favorite aspect of the Training?

I really liked both the video and audio aspects of the Training – the audios meant that I could listen in my car or on the move – then watch the videos when I had time to sit down and study. The live event was great and the staff are quick to respond to any queries throughout the course, as well as being very responsive on the Facebook group.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted your professional life/financial well-being?

Since qualifying I have had a steady stream of paying clients, which has been a useful addition to my life both professionally and financially.

How has being an Eating Psychology Coach impacted you personally?

Becoming a coach has made me value the gifts and knowledge that I have to offer to others in a way I had not previously appreciated.

What do you see for yourself in your future as an Eating Psychology Coach – where is your work evolving towards?

I am currently becoming very interested in producing short video blogs – vlogs – and I have begun to work with a local hospital who is keen to get this knowledge out to their staff.

Why would you recommend the Training to others?

It’s a really interesting and unique training – easy to access and you can study at times that suit you.
